Times2 Has a New Executive Director: Welcome Dr. Lawrence Davenport!

The following is the text of a letter I received on Saturday:

January 29, 2009

Dear Times2 Academy Parents/Guardians:

The Times2 Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lawrence Davenport as the new Executive Director and Academic Dean of Times2 Academy. Dr. Davenport begins his duties at the Academy of February 2, 2009.

At 5:00p.m.– 7:00p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, parents and other community members are invited to meet and greet, and share light refreshment with Dr. davenport in the elementary school foyer.

Dr. Davenport earned his BA at Michigan State, his Masters at Michigan State and Leicester University, England. He earned his Doctorate at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.

He joins the Times2 family with an extensive background in education, government, and the private business sectors. Most recently, he has served at the Executive Vice President of Neher & Associates, an organizational and consulting firm. Among his numerous positions in education, he has served as Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Education for Elementary and Secondary Education. Since that time, amidst the education genre, he has served as Associate Vice Chancellor for University Schools, VP of Finance and Operations and CFO at The Milton Hershey School, and Assistant Dean for Special Programs at University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Davenport served as the Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Vocational Education, Vice Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Equality of Educational Opportunity, and in addition, served as a Commissioner of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission. He is also an accomplished author and has published articles and essays in various publications including the ” Journal of the Alliance of Black School Educators”, ” Philanthropy Roundtable”‘, and co-author of the book Career Education and Minorities.

Dr. Davenport’s experience and leadership are essential for advancing the Times2 mission. He and his wife, Cecelia are looking forward to being a part of the Times2 community.
